For awhile I was skeptical about these half-price gift certificate deals. It never made any sense to me how any third party company is benefiting from this.

If you're not familiar with the term or practice, here's how it works. I go to www.restaurant.com (a lot), on this site you can search for restaurants in your zip or town. All the restaurants listed offer savings in some was shape or form. For example, as you can see from the screen shot above 105 Harbor in Cold Spring Harbor allows you to buy $25 gift certificate for $10. That's not a bad deal. The fine print (under the add to cart button) says you must spend $45 though and it can only be used for Dinner, can't be redeemed on Holidays, Specials (I guess that means daily specials) and prix fix menu. Hmm... now it's a little less attractive. This place (in particular) is more on the expensive side. So that $25 might pay for one person in my family.
It's a great concept, all parties involved seem to benefit. The restaurant has now obtained you as a new customer, you saved some money and the website (in this scenario) restaurant.com gladly took your money and made the sale.
I've found other websites, operated and maintained locally... with not so strict rules. For instance Newsday offers a service now just like this. They advertise it on the paper and in their website. It's normally a bid ad at the top of their website. On KJOY (98.3) I always hear the DJ's talking about how it works and focusing on one restaurant at a time. It's always nice to hear the reviews then read about them (in my opinion). You can view them all by visiting http://lirg.longislanddeals.com/index.php.
The great thing (that I and many of my friends have found) is that the places on longislanddeals and newsday don't have a minimum requirement. Last week we went to the Dockside Cafe in Babylon. The half price deal cost us $25 from KJOY and our bill came out to $58 for the two of us (with drinks). So really it only cost $33 for the two of us to have a nice (adult/no kid) night out. I'd say that was a good deal! By the way, if you go to the Dock Side Cafe try the linguine with white clam sauce.
